In early 2012, the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents recommended the consolidation of Macon State College, founded in 1968, and Middle Georgia College, founded in 1884. The consolidation included institutions in Dublin, Eastman, and Warner Robins with the merger. On January 8, 2013 Middle Georgia State was created with a name change to Middle Georgia State University in 2015 when the offer of masters degrees was approved.
Archival records of the former Middle Georgia College are housed and maintained in the Roberts Memorial Library on the Cochran campus. Dublin houses it's own records but some items can also be found here.
Archival records of the former Macon State College are housed and maintained in the Library on the Macon campus. Warner Robins records will eventually have a place in this space at a later date.
Archival records of Middle Georgia State University, the primary Archives for the entire institution, will be housed in Roberts Memorial Library until such time a more centralized location can be determined.
In addition to the colleges' Archives, the Library holds and maintains several special collections:
- Terry Coleman Museum and Archives (Cochran campus)
- Vietnam Oral History Project (Cochran / online)
- Waddell Barnes Botanical Gardens - Horticultural Collection (Macon campus)
- Bernadette Loftin Collection (Cochran)
- Eva Jean Upton Collection (Macon campus)
