Jacob Lawrence

Born Atlantic City, New Jersey

During his lifetime, Jacob Lawrence achieved a level of recognition previously unequaled by an African American artist. In 1941 he exhibited a series of sixty paintings, originally entitled The Migration of the Negro, at Edith Halpert’s prestigious Downtown Gallery in New York City. 

Aaron Douglas

Aaron Douglas (1900- 1979). Painter, muralist. Important visual artist during the Harlem Renaissance. Illustrated James Weldon Johnson's book of poetic sermons, God's Trombones. Founded the Art Department at Fisk University and taught there for twenty-nine years.

Faith Ringgold

Faith Ringgold (born October 8, 1930 in Harlem, New York City) is an American painter, writer, mixed media sculptor, and performance artist, best known for her narrative quilts.
