Student Success Center

The mission of the Student Success Center is to positively impact retention and progression by providing academic assistance and support to students and faculty at Middle Georgia State University.

Services

The Student Success Center, in conjunction with Academic Schools and Departments, provides both face-to-face and online tutoring. Tutoring is free to all currently enrolled students.

Tutors are provided for both content-specific assistance as well as general topics, such as study skills and time management. Tutors are required to complete a training program certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and seek certification at the Regular, Advanced, and Master levels.

Online Tutoring Opportunity
The Student Success Center (SSC) is eager to help students succeed academically by offering a direct connection to tutors with Online Tutoring. This method of tutoring provides faculty with an opportunity to place a specialized and trained SSC tutor in their D2L Brightspace course(s). The online tutor is familiar with the course content and a consistent academic resource available in-person and online. An encouraging advantage of Online Tutoring is location, as students’ tutoring needs are found conveniently in a D2L Brightspace course. Thank you, and the SSC looks forward to assisting students directly as Online Tutors.

Coaches   Appointment  Referral  Learn More

Academic Success Coaching at MGA empowers students to become confident, lifelong learners who are equipped with the skills, resources, and support systems necessary to succeed and achieve their academic and personal goals.

Academic Success Coaching provides holistic, personalized support for all undergraduate students at MGA. Special focus is placed on at-risk students, first generation students, and students on academic probation. MGAs faculty/staff can make referrals or students can refer themselves to utilize and benefit from the support of a success coach.

As a student of MGA, an Academic Success Coach will be able to help you:

  • Prioritize scheduling for academic coaching, peer tutoring within the Student Success Center and discussing other supporting academic resources such as the Writing Center and the Mathematics Academic Resource Center (MARC), career services, counseling services, and much more.

  • Develop strong study skills, improve time management, become motivated and organized, overcome test anxiety, keep track of assignments, and more!

  • Ask questions and receive help with issues like:

  • Navigating the campus

  • Communicating with your professors

  • Referring you to campus resources

  • Utilizing the MGA’s online and student platform

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a non-remedial approach to supporting students enrolled in historically at-risk courses. The University of Missouri – Kansas City describes a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader as conducting voluntary review sessions with preplanned activities that combine “what to learn’ with ‘how to learn”’ (https://www.umkc.edu/asm/supplemental-instruction).

The SI Leader uses collaborative learning strategies, such as “Think/Pair/Share” to assist students and holds office hours to respond to any questions. Traditionally, an SI Leader attends class lectures, gaining rapport with students, while meeting with faculty weekly or biweekly.
For more information on this opportunity, please contact Paul Johnson, Assistant Director of the Student Success Center (SSC) at paul.johnson@mga.edu, or call (478) 471-2057.
