Spotlight on the library - Escape Room
The MGA library will begin hosting an escape room in mid February. The room will be found in Roberts Memorial Library on the Cochran campus. We spoke with Jessica Williams, reference and instruction librarian, about escapes rooms and why have one in the library.
What is the point of an escape room? Why are they popular?
The object of an escape room game is for the participants to work together or separately to solve an assortment of types of puzzles using clues that are integrated into the room. The experience is based on a theme, and at the beginning of the game the group is given a fictional scenario that leads to them being trapped in a room unless they can find and use clues to find the combinations to various locks. Since our university's mascot is a knight, our escape room is a medieval castle-themed room.
What is the history of escape rooms?
I think the precursors that led to modern escape rooms started further back with things like video games where the player had to get out of a room. Escape room games started more on other continents and started to appear in the US ten or so years ago, but in recent years they have become very popular, especially among college aged students wanting a fun and unique group activity to do with their friends.
Why did you want to bring an escape room to MGA?
I shadowed librarians running an escape room at the previous college I worked at. Students loved it, and I thought it would be something really awesome that we could give students to do for fun in the library.
What are you hoping that students will get from the escape room?
One of the reasons some college libraries have created escape rooms is that there are so many parallels between solving the puzzles in the room and going through the research process when you're working on class paper. Research involves putting pieces together and knowing "where to look," and it can be frustrating feeling like you're stuck at a dead end. I hope that students make those connections, and after meeting their library staff during the games, they remember that they have friendly librarians that can help if they get stuck or have questions.
