Comparison of General-Purpose LLMs

Model Primary Academic Features Privacy Policy Training Policy Multimodal Capabilities
Claude Excels at long-form text analysis and summarization, handling large documents and providing detailed, human-like responses. Use caution. Anthropic may collect user data. Users can opt out of having their inputs and outputs used for training, but it's not always straightforward. By default, user inputs/outputs may be used for model training, but there is an opt-out option. Reads documents and sees images.
Gemini Integrates with Google Workspace, allowing for seamless use with Docs, Sheets, and Gmail. The "Gemini for Education" version offers specific features for educators and students, including lesson planning and research report generation. Depends on the version. Gemini for Education accounts have enterprise-grade data protection, meaning data is not human-reviewed or used to train models. User data from Gemini for Education accounts is not used for training. For personal accounts, data may be used to improve the models. Reads documents, sees images, and sees video.
ChatGPT A versatile tool for drafting essays, brainstorming, and providing explanations. The "ChatGPT Edu" version offers enhanced privacy and control for academic institutions. Depends on the version. ChatGPT Edu offers enterprise-level privacy, with no conversations used to train models. Personal accounts may have their data used for training. By default, user inputs/outputs may be used to train models, but users on business and education plans can opt-out. Reads documents and sees images.
Copilot Integrates with Microsoft 365 apps like Word and PowerPoint. It's useful for generating outlines, summarizing articles, and creating presentations directly within your workflow. Use caution. Data usage is tied to Microsoft's general privacy policy. The enterprise and education versions offer more robust data protection. Microsoft may use user data to improve its services. Specific policies vary by subscription type. Reads documents and sees images.
Perplexity Functions as a conversational search engine, providing cited answers to questions with sources. This is highly beneficial for research and fact-checking, as it minimizes the risk of hallucination by referencing its sources. Users can opt out of having their search queries and feedback used for AI learning. User data is used to improve the search experience and AI models, but there is an opt-out option. Reads documents.
Character.ai Focuses on conversational AI with user-created personas. Not suitable for academic work due to its primary focus on role-playing and entertainment. Privacy concerns exist, as chat content may be used for AI training. Use caution. User content, including chats, is collected and may be used for model training. Chats are used to train the AI models. The platform is not designed for privacy-sensitive academic tasks. None.

Comparison of Specialized Tools

Model Primary Academic Features Privacy Policy Training Policy Multimodal Capabilities
NotebookLM A research tool that can analyze and summarize personal documents you upload (like PDFs or lecture notes) to generate insights, outlines, and summaries. Your personal data and uploaded documents are not used to train the model. This is its key privacy selling point. The model is trained on a base of public data but does not use your uploaded documents. Reads documents.
Elicit An AI research assistant that helps with literature reviews. It can find papers, extract key findings, and summarize arguments, making it great for early-stage research. Minimal data retention and a focus on transparency. Elicit is a public benefit corporation. The platform is built on an architecture that supervises reasoning processes, not outcomes, and is not trained on user data. Reads documents.
Scholarcy Creates "flashcards" from academic papers, breaking down complex articles into a summary, key findings, and a bibliography. It's a fantastic tool for reading comprehension and note-taking. Its privacy policy is designed to protect academic content, with a focus on data security. The service does not use your documents to train its models. Reads documents.
Research Rabbit A visualization tool for academic papers. It helps researchers find and discover new publications related to their topic by mapping connections between authors and citations. All features are free and the website states the tool will remain free "for researchers." There is no information available about the use of user data for model training. Reads documents.
GrammarlyGO An AI writing assistant integrated into Grammarly. It helps with drafting, rephrasing, and generating text snippets. It's excellent for improving clarity and tone in academic papers. Grammarly has a robust privacy policy, particularly with its enterprise and education offerings, and a plagiarism checker. Grammarly has been transparent about its use of anonymized user data to improve its models. None.
MidJourney A powerful AI image generator. Not suitable for academic writing or research. Its use in higher education is limited to creative assignments or visual aids for presentations. Use caution. By default, all prompts and generated images are public on Discord servers, unless you have a paid "stealth mode" subscription. The models are trained on vast datasets of public images, and your generations can be reused by others. Sees images (for remixing), generates images.
Dall-E An AI image generator. It's useful for creating visual aids for presentations, posters, or educational materials to illustrate complex concepts. Depends on the version. Data usage policies vary. Its integration with products like Copilot and ChatGPT means its privacy policy is tied to those platforms. It is trained on a massive dataset of image-text pairs. The user-generated prompts and images may be used to improve the models. Sees images (for editing), generates images.
OpenArt An AI image generation platform. Like Midjourney and Dall-E, its primary use is for creating visual content. Not a tool for academic writing. The privacy policy states that user creations are private by default unless you choose to publish or share them. Unpublished creations are deleted after 7 days. The service is trained on a large dataset of images. Your private creations are not used to train the model. Sees images (for editing), generates images.
