Here is an example poster template (PPT) for a conference. Keep in mind that one of your dimensions, be it length or width, will need to be 36" or smaller.

Finding High Quality Images for Print

Keep in mind that you are looking for images that as a general rule will need to be around 10 or more MB in size. Another thing to check for is 300 dpi or more. Most images on the internet are 72 dpi and will not be clear when enlarged to print at poster size.
