Ferri was one of the first researchers interested in the study of crime statistics. Ferri believed that social, economic, and political factors were important in attempting to develop a comprehensive theory of crime. Included among the factors were: physical (race, climate, geographic location, seasonal effects, temperature), anthropological (age, sex, organic and psychological conditions), and social (density of population, customs, religion, organization of government, economic and industrial conditions).

Social Problems: Continuity and Change certainly does not minimize the persistence of social problems, but neither does it overlook the possibilities for change offered by social research and by the activities of everyday citizens working to make a difference. Readers of Steve Barkan’s book will find many examples of how social problems have been improved and of strategies that hold great potential for solving them today and in the future.

My purpose in teaching about the family is to provide you with information that is scientifically sound and practically useful. It is not enough for me to simply spread facts. I want to tell students what works, what doesn't work, and how to tell the difference in finding real solutions to their own life troubles. Call it bias or just common sense, if you read this book you'll find more answers than questions.

They function in a core assessment role for describing, explaining, and predicting family-based social patterns for the United States and other countries of the world. Sociologists allow us to understand the larger social and personal-level trends in families.
