Project Management

A structured guide highlighting resources to help complete the assignments associated with Project Management courses at Middle Georgia State University.

 

Module Two

 

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to understand and recall the five project management process groups, and ten knowledge areas to recognize how they contribute to organizational IT knowledge.  You will interpret how various aspects of the project management plan can affect IT projects. 

Students will:

  • Understand and Recall the FIVE project management process groups and TEN knowledge areas
  • Gain basic understanding of a management plan (such as Deming's 14 Points of Management or Six Sigma) and construct an overview
  • Critique and evaluate the effectiveness of a project
 

Tasks

  • Recall and Discuss the FIVE project management process groups and TEN knowledge areas in a project management plan
  • Study and Discuss a project management instrument (such as Six Sigma
  • Analyze a case study that used the management instrument (eg: Six Sigma) to evaluate the success or failure of an IT project. 
  • Describe how one of the TEN knowledge areas influenced your case study plan.  
 

Project Management Process Groups

 
  • Initiating
    • Those processes performed to define a new project or a new phase of an existing project by obtaining authorization to start te project or phase.
  • Planning
    • These processes required to establish the scope of the project, refine the objectives, and define the course of action required to attain the objectives, and define the course of action required to attain the objectives that the project was undertaken to achieve.
  • Executing
    • Those processes performed to complete the work defined in the project management plan to satisfy te project requirements. 
  • Monitoring & Controlling
    • Those processes required to track, review, and regulate the progress and performance of the project; identify any areas in which changes to the plan are required; and initiate the corresponding changes. 
  • Closing
    • Those processes performed to formally complete or close te project, phase or contract.
